Saturday night I hopped over to Chill Out with Shuna and a group of her friends. It’s not quite the scene I experienced last weekend at Donkey Shot. It’s a chic spot on the waterfront that serves more cocktails than eka beers, and the DJ sticks to house music. While it doesn’t seem to be exclusively an internationals’ destination, I’d wager my rudimentary knowledge of Kizomba was equal to or greater than half of the clientele’s.
While its possible that my snapshots of the club overstate the color line, they certainly understate the amount of security built in to the experience, from a stiff cover charge to guys in suits with little headsets. And I paused a bit when a friend proclaimed Chill Out to be “less African”, and not only because his tone said this was a good thing.
